This past weekend marked the 4th anniversary of “Les Journées Particulières.” This three day event has LVMH to open its doors and show the public how couture is made. Many of the artisan houses owned by LVMH take part in the event and allow the public access, and for the workers to share their passion and unyielding commitment to excellence.
During the previous years of Les Journées Particulières, LVMH opened its doors to several hundred thousand people to present the immense wealth of heritage and know-how at LVMH Maisons that is passed on from one generation to the next. Guided tours featured demonstrations of artisanal skills, talks and interactive presentations by several
thousand artisans – watchmakers, couturières, dressmakers, shoemakers, cellar masters, jewelers, makeup artists, head seamstresses, chefs and many others.
This year, Les Journées Particulières included 40 Maisons that had never opened to the public before – located in 14 countries on five continents.

For the three days, 3,000 artisans, designers and employees of the Maisons took part in the event. They shared with the public their passion and their taste for excellence during masterclasses, workshop visits, and demonstrations of know-how. This three day open door event created a unique moment during which the 180,000 visitors were able to talk with the employees and discover the art of their trades.
Many people waited up to four hours to get into the houses to get a behind the scenes glimpse into the usually secretive workings. These houses usually keep their work under secret not wanting their techniques getting out, but this event truly lets the public see what is done behind the closed doors.
When I lived in Paris, I had the luxury of getting access to many of these couture houses, and it is something that I will never forget. It is truly a magical experience getting to see the true craftsmanship that goes into making many of these one of a kind, handmade products. Most of them are dying trades, and I feel lucky to witness them in person, and also to be able to inform others about the techniques and pass on some of the knowledge that I learned in Paris.
If you happen to be in Paris, or any of the cities that holds Les Journées Particulières next year, I highly recommend getting in line to witness the true craftsmanship that these houses have to offer. Who knows, I may just be standing in line right along with you!
